LOWE'S GIVES HELPING HAND TO CHEYENNE ARTISTS GUILD

In case you weren't aware, our Cheyenne Artists Guild is also known as  the historic Van Tassell Carriage House, built in 1886. Though the Van Tassell Mansion was torn down many years ago, a part of the property, the carriage house was moved a short distant to where it stands today. Over the years, the little carriage house was used by  various organizations, but on July 8, 1967, with the signing of a lease with the City of Cheyenne, the carriage house became the Cheyenne Artists Guild's permanent home.

There has been ups and downs throughout the years but today's economy, has made operations especially difficult for non-profits groups like our little guild.  Year-in year-out, the guild is faced with the  dilemma, which of the many needed repairs to this old historic building will we be able to  afford?  Wanting to be a good steward, the CAG board has struggled  with this difficult question, being aware of the repairs, yet not finding a good solution to get the work done without diminishing a shoestring budget. The  work of scraping, priming and painting the exterior had become 2012's "must do repair". It was decided by the board it would have to be completed regardless of depleting  part of the guild's rainy day savings.

Our CAG member, Nick Dudash, came up with an idea and made the connection by finding out about the Lowe's Community Projects. Because of Nick's idea and with the help of Tony and Dee James working with Sonya Reacharal, of Lowe's Human Resources and Cami Ravenscroft, of Lowe's Commercial Sales, the guild will be getting the needed exterior painting done!  Excited to be a part of preserving one of Cheyenne's historic buildings, Lowe's is already making arrangements by contacting other business to help obtain the needed supplies that is beyond their funding allowance. The plan is for this project to be a community effort with the scraping, priming and painting all to begin in the week following Easter. The guild is thankful to Nick, Tony and Dee for making the connection with Lowes.  But most of all, we want to extend an EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU TO LOWE'S for supporting the Cheyenne Artist Guild in their time of need!   Thank you Cheyenne LOWE'S, you have been the answer to our prayers!

Next time when shopping in Lowe's, tell them thank you for helping the guild and let them know how much the Cheyenne community appreciates their help!

Don't forget...check the blog often, we will be posting updates on this project as it moves forward!

April 2nd CAG Member Meeting: Connie Norman

DON'T MISS THE APRIL 2ND CAG MEMBER MEETING
CONNIE NORMAN
PRESENTING A FASCINATING PROGRAM ABOUT HER POTTERY
MEETING STARTS AT 7PM

Connie Norman is known for her painstakingly and beautiful pottery.  Armed with pieces of movable type she presses each letter individually into the clay. She constructs each piece with a combination of handbuilt techniques. Norman’s glazing process continues the meticulous process by cutting out each design from masking tape.

Connie creates ceramic work that is about inner dialogue--stories from her life, snippets of conversation, and memories that she imagines. She is fascinated by the rhythmic qualities created by color, texture, and patterns. Decoration is essential because it celebrates and enhances form and speaks purely of aesthetics.

Norman’s work has been shown internationally and has been published in Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated, and 500 Vases.
She is also a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Fellowship recipient, and she received a Wyoming Art Council Visual Art Fellowship.  She is a graduate of the New York State of Ceramics at Alfred University.

CAG Member, Donna Person rescues lamp for Comea House Auction

Not long ago the Cheyenne Organization, Comea Shelter contacted the Cheyenne Artists Guild for  help.  In need of funds, Comea Shelter is planning a auction and asked the help of an artist to repair and decorate a lamp that was donated to the cause.   Our own Cheyenne Artists Guild secretary, Donna  Person  stepped up to the plate and offered her services.  Her wish is that by beautifying the lamp, it will help raise funds for the shelter in it's time of need.

Donna Persons'
improvement on  lamp

"They are running out of money and they brought a very beat up, cracked, chipped lamp into the guild while I was there and wanted an artist to paint it, then afterwards for it to be auction off.  I said I would.  I had to repair it, fill in the cracks and chips.  It was originally a pale blue.  Was harder to repair than paint."
"I think the work the Comea Shelter does is really worthwhile.  I have often been part of groups that donate meals for a week or helped in other ways.  No one should be homeless in a country like ours but the number of families, teenagers, and old people is growing daily."
