ART DESIGN AND DINE TONIGHT

Green Leaves by Diana Riverstone

November 14, 2013
5pm-8pm

DIANA RIVERSTONE
AND HELEN HART

will be the featured artists at
the November Art Design and Dine
at the Cheyenne Artists Guild

WORDS FROM HELEN ABOUT HER ART

"Helen Hart grew up surrounded by weaving as her mother started to weave when Helen was 6 years old. Her mom also taught her how to knit. Mother continued to weave and Helen continued to knit and sew clothing for herself and her daughter. Then the summer of 1974, when the Harts moved to Cheyenne from Laurel, MD, they took a trip to Oregon to see Grandma. She taught Helen's kids to weave a spin and Helen also tried her hand and was hooked. Since then she has woven yards of material for clothing, scarves, ponchos, place mats. She loves to work in color but also loves putting different white yarns together. Weaving with textured yarns and doing weaving patterns are her interests also. She would love to show you her work Nov. 14."

WORDS FROM DIANA ABOUT HER ART

"My goal as a painter is to create beauty and to express the joy I experience in being alive. I particularly enjoy creating dramatic and unexpected effects that catch people’s attention in that brief moment of surprise and delight. My inspiration comes from nature, memories of places I have been, a thought, pictures, music, a dream, meditation or a totally spontaneous happening as I paint. My works emerge from a highly interactive process involving my hands, eyes and feelings, my ordinary self and Creative Self, the original inspiration, my tools and materials, and what happens on the support itself. As a painting develops, it seems to take on a life of its own which gives rise to surprising intuitive urges like using my left hand or a non-traditional color for the tree! Creating a painting is truly a magical journey that I love exploring.

My approach is to constantly enhance and become more aware of the creative process itself, to experiment with expression and to explore what is possible with acrylics. Both creating and viewing art is a vital, sensual and emotional experience. It is a full and conscious participation in the on-going act of creation experienced through the senses, feelings and intuitive perceptions and understandings."

Diana Riverstone
March Guest Presentation on
"Creative Inspiration"

What is creativity? What seems to shut off the flow of inspiration that keeps us creating? How can we get back into that flow and/or enhance that process? Artists and creators of all kinds know those special times when we get so wrapped up in what we are doing, time seems to disappear, and work just happens. When we come back to our ordinary focus, we realize we were "someplace else" and we don't really know how to get back there. Over the last few years I have been learning and discovering ways to tap into that process at will and am delighted to share this with you.

Diana Riverstone:
"I began painting in earnest about six years ago and quickly became bored with painting in the style and with the materials I first learned. I switched to acrylics because of all the mediums available and the incredible potential in them. During this time, I also read books by artists, some that were tremendously thought provoking. I was also learning more about being a real human being and how we work. This taught me steps to shift my brain waves at will and to touch into that deepest flow of inspiration. The steps are easy and can be done by anyone."

"Examples below show different ways to use the same materials. These kinds of painting resulted from my using the techniques I have learned to enhance inspiration. I’ll be sharing some of them in the presentation and will talk you through them so you can use them on your own"
Cougar Country – Painting by Diana Riverstone
Primarily acrylic paint with light application of textural medium to create the rocks and foreground. I used interference gold to highlight the hills which shifts from gold to platinum depending on the angle of viewing.
Midnight Magic – Painting by Diana Riverstone
Used stucco, fiber, sand and black lava mediums with interference, iridescent, metallic and acrylic paints. There is a glowing bronze-gold highlights on the leaves which can be seen at certain angles. A “sculptural painting” that explores what might be possible with these materials.
Splendor – Painting by Diana Riverstone
Acrylic and iridescent paints done on two sides of a piece of glass and protected by another, unpainted glass. Parts of the snowy foreground are actually the background painted on the reverse side of the glass and shows through as clear “ice” puddles and adds color to the snow in other areas. Painting on both sides of the glass makes an unexpected separation (thickness of the glass itself) of the foreground from the background.
