A bit about Dee James in her own words:

"Hello, My name is Dee James, I am a fine arts artist living and working from my studio in Cheyenne. I work in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, charcoal, and pencil. I have lived in Wyoming since I was two years old. I grew up in Thermopolis and Riverton, Wyoming where my love for art began. At an early age I began drawing, and I am a self taught artist. I began selling my art work at craft shows in the Tri-State area in 2004. My work was well accepted, and has sold to customers from all over the world. Inspired by my beautiful Wyoming surrounding I paint the environment in bold and brilliant colors. I have traveled the state seeking out old towns and wild open places to capture in my paintings. Many of these paintings hang in business and Doctor offices in Cheyenne. I also have a love of the abstract and expressing emotion in my paintings. This genre has produced some of my most beautiful and haunting piece of art work."

Lowe's Remodeling Historic Building

Posted: May 15, 2012 5:39 PM MDTUpdated: May 15, 2012 5:39 PM MDT
The Van Tassell carriage barn, where the Cheyenne Artists Guild calls home, is receiving a much needed renovation.
Lowe's is taking the building on as part of a community project.
They're paying to completely renovate the inside and outside of the building.
The old carriage house is registered as one of the state's historic buildings and was originally built in the 1870's.
It hasn't received any renovations in over 20 years.
Artists Guild President, Dianna James, says she'd looked at replacing the outside of the building. But being a non-profit organization, couldn't afford the $22,000- $28,000 thousand estimated cost.
"It means the world to us. Just by the grace of God they came to us. Because we don't have the funds to replace this," James said.
The building is expected to be completed sometime in mid-June.

Wyoming Tribune Eagle's Article About Lowe's Project

Lowe's helps Artists Guild restore their building

Corey Bitler scrapes old paint and adhesive from the shingled exterior of the carriage house Saturday at Holliday Park. Bitler and other Lowe's employees are volunteering materials and man power to refinish the more than 100 year old building that now houses the Cheyenne Artists Guild. Dominic Benintende/staff
CHEYENNE -- What's happening to the white building inside Holliday Park shows what volunteers can do.

Known as the carriage house, the building is the longtime home of the Cheyenne Artists Guild.

It started out in the 1880s as an opulent stable and a garage for top-of-the-line carriages.

The building complemented an extravagant home. Rancher and businessman R.S. Van Tassell owned it during Cheyenne’s glory days, likely in the 1880s. His mansion was torn down years ago. But the carriage house remains as a reminder of Cheyenne’s past.

Employees at Lowe’s Home Improvement of Cheyenne are giving the carriage house a much-needed makeover. The company is donating the supplies and materials needed for the project.

“It has been fun,” volunteer Sonya Reachard said of the work.

She heads human resources at the Cheyenne facility on Prairie Avenue.

The scope of the project has expanded from an initial paint job. Volunteers are tearing up the carpet inside. They will also paint the inside walls and put down new floors, and they have done some carpentry work and caulking.

Reachard and Lowe’s employee Cameon Ravenscroft have donated many hours to the project.

They said they wanted to do something to help the guild since many of its members are too old to do much of the renovation.

Both said they like its history, too.

The building houses the oldest art gallery in Wyoming, said Dee James, the guild’s president. It leases the building from the city of Cheyenne for $1 a year, but it is responsible for maintenance.

James found that the paint alone would cost between $18,000 and $22,000.

“We’re a nonprofit. We don’t have the money,” she said.

But Reachard heard about the guild’s need. Volunteers started the renovation in April and expect to be done in mid-June, she said.

They help anytime they can. Reachard and Ravenscroft have been there most every day.

The project also got some help from Girl Scouts from Troops 1069 and 1257. They scraped off the old paint.

Reachard said she wants to help with a project that benefits the place she lives.

“The history is so fascinating; to restore it is really rewarding,” she said.

Original stalls for horses remain in the stable part of the house. Its wooden columns are elegantly styled.

Teeth marks remain on the wood, too, left by horses from long ago.

Artist guild members provide volunteers with food to show their appreciation. Lowe’s employees say that isn’t necessary.

Said James, “We thank the good Lord that they’re offering to do this for us. They’re very good to the community.”

At a glance

Employees from Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse of Cheyenne are donating their time to paint and restore the Cheyenne Artists Guild building at Holliday Park. Lowe’s is donating the paint and all other materials.

The guild meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at the building. It has art shows, workshops and programs. A single membership costs $35 a year or $50 for a family. The group also provides a scholarship.

Lowe's Update! Scraping Paint....

Scraping off old paint from
the exterior of the guild began last Saturday
Lowe's Project begins!

Yes, things are changing around the guild.  This past Friday all the walls and furniture inside the gallery were cleared and are now ready for new carpet and paint.  Then on Saturday, Cami Ravenscroft and Soyna Reacharal from Lowe's arrived to kick off the Lowe's Community Project by scraping the old paint from the guild's exterior.

Now that the work has offically begun could you lend the guild a hand?  Whether it is signing up to help feed the work crew or helping with elbow grease, any time or help you could spare would be greatly appreciated!  Extra tools and gloves will be available! You can expect that on most days till the scraping is completed someone will be at the guild between 10am and 2pm. Drop by and lend a hand!

If your not able to come by and help with manual labor, don't forget you can sign up to help provide food for lunches or make a monatary donation toward lunches for our volunteer workers.

For more information or to sign up to help email cheyenneartistsguild@gmail.com
or come by the guild and see what is needed on the sign up sheet.

President Dee James does her part.

LOWE'S UPDATE!!!

Cami Ravenscroft and CAG President,Dee James
discussing plans for the galleries new look!
Earlier I reported the exciting news about Lowe's coming to the rescue of the Cheyenne Artists Guild by undertaking the major project of painting the exterior of our guild home, the Van Tassell Carriage House. (It's hard to keep a secret too long... so I'm going to tell you now...) Not only will Lowe's be doing the exterior they have offered to freshen up the interior as well! Last week, Lowe's personal: Cami Ravenscroft, Commercial Sales and Tonya Reis, Department Manager of Paint Windows and Doors came by the guild with paint chips in hand and other surprise samples of materials to give our building a new more inviting look!!! (Sorry you will have to wait till next time to find out about the other surprise samples... I'm not giving the secret away yet!) Cami's plan is to update the dark blue walls to a middle toned neutral gray. By doing this the art hanging on the walls will really pop!!!

LOWE'S GIVES HELPING HAND TO CHEYENNE ARTISTS GUILD

In case you weren't aware, our Cheyenne Artists Guild is also known as  the historic Van Tassell Carriage House, built in 1886. Though the Van Tassell Mansion was torn down many years ago, a part of the property, the carriage house was moved a short distant to where it stands today. Over the years, the little carriage house was used by  various organizations, but on July 8, 1967, with the signing of a lease with the City of Cheyenne, the carriage house became the Cheyenne Artists Guild's permanent home.

There has been ups and downs throughout the years but today's economy, has made operations especially difficult for non-profits groups like our little guild.  Year-in year-out, the guild is faced with the  dilemma, which of the many needed repairs to this old historic building will we be able to  afford?  Wanting to be a good steward, the CAG board has struggled  with this difficult question, being aware of the repairs, yet not finding a good solution to get the work done without diminishing a shoestring budget. The  work of scraping, priming and painting the exterior had become 2012's "must do repair". It was decided by the board it would have to be completed regardless of depleting  part of the guild's rainy day savings.

Our CAG member, Nick Dudash, came up with an idea and made the connection by finding out about the Lowe's Community Projects. Because of Nick's idea and with the help of Tony and Dee James working with Sonya Reacharal, of Lowe's Human Resources and Cami Ravenscroft, of Lowe's Commercial Sales, the guild will be getting the needed exterior painting done!  Excited to be a part of preserving one of Cheyenne's historic buildings, Lowe's is already making arrangements by contacting other business to help obtain the needed supplies that is beyond their funding allowance. The plan is for this project to be a community effort with the scraping, priming and painting all to begin in the week following Easter. The guild is thankful to Nick, Tony and Dee for making the connection with Lowes.  But most of all, we want to extend an EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU TO LOWE'S for supporting the Cheyenne Artist Guild in their time of need!   Thank you Cheyenne LOWE'S, you have been the answer to our prayers!

Next time when shopping in Lowe's, tell them thank you for helping the guild and let them know how much the Cheyenne community appreciates their help!

Don't forget...check the blog often, we will be posting updates on this project as it moves forward!
