Hand blown glass Artist
KATHI TARANTOLA

It’s not everyday you get to meet someone working in hand blown glass but during the October art tour the public will get the opportunity! The Artist’s Guild will host the beautiful glass work of Cheyenne Artist Kathi Tarantola.

Kathi Tarantola, artist, received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wyoming. Most of her early work was three dimensional, sculptural, form. However, after developing an interest in wheel-thrown pottery, the artist turned toward further exploration of various studio crafts. In 2005, Tarantola began working with hot glass and found her passion for glass blowing. Then, in 2011, Tarantola studied amongst world-renowned glass masters at the famous Pilchuck Glass Studio near Seattle, Washington.

"Blowing glass is like the 'extreme sport' of the studio crafts," says Tarantola. "Nothing is more thrilling than combining elements of color and design with a great big dose of excitement and danger!"

Don't miss out on the opportunity of Kathi sharing her art with you!

ART DESIGN AND DINE TONIGHT

Green Leaves by Diana Riverstone

November 14, 2013
5pm-8pm

DIANA RIVERSTONE
AND HELEN HART

will be the featured artists at
the November Art Design and Dine
at the Cheyenne Artists Guild

WORDS FROM HELEN ABOUT HER ART

"Helen Hart grew up surrounded by weaving as her mother started to weave when Helen was 6 years old. Her mom also taught her how to knit. Mother continued to weave and Helen continued to knit and sew clothing for herself and her daughter. Then the summer of 1974, when the Harts moved to Cheyenne from Laurel, MD, they took a trip to Oregon to see Grandma. She taught Helen's kids to weave a spin and Helen also tried her hand and was hooked. Since then she has woven yards of material for clothing, scarves, ponchos, place mats. She loves to work in color but also loves putting different white yarns together. Weaving with textured yarns and doing weaving patterns are her interests also. She would love to show you her work Nov. 14."

WORDS FROM DIANA ABOUT HER ART

"My goal as a painter is to create beauty and to express the joy I experience in being alive. I particularly enjoy creating dramatic and unexpected effects that catch people’s attention in that brief moment of surprise and delight. My inspiration comes from nature, memories of places I have been, a thought, pictures, music, a dream, meditation or a totally spontaneous happening as I paint. My works emerge from a highly interactive process involving my hands, eyes and feelings, my ordinary self and Creative Self, the original inspiration, my tools and materials, and what happens on the support itself. As a painting develops, it seems to take on a life of its own which gives rise to surprising intuitive urges like using my left hand or a non-traditional color for the tree! Creating a painting is truly a magical journey that I love exploring.

My approach is to constantly enhance and become more aware of the creative process itself, to experiment with expression and to explore what is possible with acrylics. Both creating and viewing art is a vital, sensual and emotional experience. It is a full and conscious participation in the on-going act of creation experienced through the senses, feelings and intuitive perceptions and understandings."

Kevin Phillips:

" I’m inspired by many different elements of art.  From 3D artist such as Ron Mueck, 2D artist like H.R. Giger and Salvador Dali that work in both 3D and 2D like myself.  I want to refine my skills in both dimensions by working with clay and other elements like graphite and paint.

Ron Mueck has an amazing talent to make his sculptures appear to be super realistic even despite the scaled size being larger or smaller than life.  “I never made life-size figures because it never seemed to be interesting.  We meet life-size people every day.” (Ron Mueck)  Muecks uncanny ability to show hyper realism in a surrealism way inspires me greatly.  I’ve always been drawn to make something as real as possible.

H.R. Giger has a “don’t give a shit” attitude that lets him do whatever he wants.  He does many phallic and other sexually disguised pieces of work.  It’s blatantly obvious but doesn’t let it be the main focus. My reason of inspiration by Giger is he can take something from fantasy and make it appear real.

Salvador Dali is the “weird” artist that I really like.  Dali was one of those people who took something popular and brought it to the next level.  Surrealism was executed by painting things such as Christ of St John of the Cross, Eggs and Elephants.  Although Dali is known today as the guy that painted the melting clocks, I’m inspired and more intrigued by his other works.  Like I said earlier with Ron Mueck who makes things super real, Dali makes me want to push myself to the impossible realm more.  The impossible realm not only inspires of the cartoon characters that I like to draw but pushes my realism ideas to a whole different level.

What I want my artwork to be is “real.”  Not just looking visually real, but feeling visually real.  I want my viewers to be stuck in that painting or drawing and walk away from it feeling like they were there, and they experienced the event.  I plan to continue and refine my skills through college and eventually become a self-working artist. "

James Overstreet:

As I grow I realize it is absolutely crucial to gain an understanding of how and why art is done. Art has existed throughout the beginning of humanity. As humans progressed in art work so did the meanings and understanding of art increase. There are spiritual and religious aspects recorded since the very beginning. Other cultures even incorporated beliefs and artwork from previous cultures into their own, which is called syncretism. Cultures even incorporated art work to help teach their beliefs and scriptures which is known as didacticism. “Teaching through pictures.”

Before college my art work reflected a lot on who I am. My art consisted of monsters, videogame/ cartoon/comic characters, and a lot of surrealism.  Mostly splash panels containing a lot going on at once. I gradually started  getting into painting and focused on abstract ideas and surrealism. I wanted to improve my skills. I was lacking the fundamentals and I was mostly self-taught in painting. This is what made me want to go back to school.

After getting a crash course in the basics, my whole perspective changed on what art work I was creating. Before my images was from my imagination, now I have the concept on creating realism through observation. Hopefully focusing on realism through observation in the future when I do create pieces from my imagination I’ll have a better concept of how light and darkness and other concepts of art come into play, giving my artwork a better since of quality.

I have a tendency of trying to get as much detail into a painting as possible. I want to break away from this approach and try something new. Like Diego Velazquez, he still achieves a level of detail even though his painting is based upon a loose formula. Personally I do not think one is better than the other but I would not mind to be able to do both ways of painting.

I have a broader understanding of art from when I first started going to college. It is enticing to learn and expand every day. I have much to learn from instructors, piers, and past artists. Hopefully one day I can take what I learn and leave a positive mark on this world to inspire and teach others as others have done to me.

SANDY WARVI

A few words about Sandy -

My favorite media for artwork is watercolor and acrylic.   Both allow for spontaneity and controlled looseness but can also be used to create intricate detail.  I especially appreciate the brilliance of color and the illusion of light that can be achieved.  Utilizing these properties, a work of art can be created to intrigue the viewer while also leaving some interpretation to the individual.

As an artist I enjoy the challenges of using watercolor and acrylic to re-create memories of times spent within and outside of Wyoming.   The unique diversity and beauty found within Wyoming (as well as other areas within the United States) offers an abundance of inspiration for artistic endeavors.

Paintings that portray my grandchildren playing in years past recall both humor and wonder as I recall times spent together.  Recent work has been exploring nature’s landscapes and creating my interpretation of those images.  When I begin a piece, I must remember what first peaked my interest.  Then as an artist, I strive to create a mood that will draw others into that subject.

"Hello, My name is Dee James, I am a fine arts artist living and working from my studio in Cheyenne. I work in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, charcoal, and pencil. I have lived in Wyoming since I was two years old. I grew up in Thermopolis and Riverton, Wyoming where my love for art began. At an early age I began drawing, and I am a self taught artist. I began selling my art work at craft shows in the Tri-State area in 2004. My work was well accepted, and has sold to customers from all over the world. Inspired by my beautiful Wyoming surrounding I paint the environment in bold and brilliant colors. I have traveled the state seeking out old towns and wild open places to capture in my paintings. Many of these paintings hang in business and Doctor offices in Cheyenne. I also have a love of the abstract and expressing emotion in my paintings. This genre has produced some of my most beautiful and haunting piece of art work."
